What is reactive power?

Reactive power is a concept in electrical engineering that refers to the portion of electrical power that oscillates back and forth between the source and the load in an alternating current (AC) circuit. Unlike real power, which is the actual power consumed by the load and performs useful work (such as lighting a bulb or running a motor), reactive power does not perform any useful work itself but is required to maintain the electromagnetic fields in inductive and capacitive components of the circuit.

In an AC circuit, the flow of current and voltage can be out of phase due to the presence of inductive and capacitive elements, such as inductors and capacitors. These components store and release energy in the form of magnetic and electric fields, respectively, causing the current and voltage to be out of synchronization. As a result, the product of the current and voltage (apparent power) can be larger than the real power (true power) being used by the load.

Reactive power is measured in volt-amperes reactive (VARs) and can be represented as:

Reactive Power (VAR) = Voltage (V) × Current (I) × sin(θ)

where θ is the phase angle difference between the voltage and current waveforms.

Utilities and power system operators must account for reactive power since it impacts the overall efficiency and stability of the power grid. Proper management of reactive power is essential to maintain voltage levels within acceptable limits, reduce power losses, and prevent issues like voltage fluctuations and equipment overheating.
