When a magnetic material, such as iron or steel, is exposed to an external magnetic field, its atoms align with the direction of the field, causing the material to become magnetized. The extent of magnetization depends on the strength of the applied magnetic field. As the field strength increases, the material's magnetization also increases, and vice versa.

However, when the external magnetic field is removed or reduced, the material's magnetization doesn't instantly return to zero. Instead, there is a residual magnetic induction remaining in the material. This behavior is due to the hysteresis loop, which illustrates the relationship between the magnetic field strength (H) applied to the material and its magnetic induction (B).

The hysteresis loop is a closed curve on a graph with the magnetizing force (H) on the x-axis and the magnetic induction (B) on the y-axis.
