Structure: The sensor typically consists of a hollow tube or a pipe through which the fluid flows. Inside the tube, there is a probe made of a conductive material (often semiconductor material) that is perpendicular to the direction of flow. This probe is referred to as the Hall element.
Magnetic Field: A permanent magnet or an electromagnet is placed near the Hall element. The magnetic field lines run perpendicular to the flow direction and also intersect the Hall element at a right angle.
Fluid Flow: The fluid (liquid or gas) flows through the tube or pipe, and as it does so, it carries charged particles (ions or electrons).
Hall Effect: When the charged particles move through the magnetic field and the Hall element, they experience a force due to the Lorentz force. This force causes a separation of charge carriers within the Hall element, leading to an accumulation of charges on opposite sides of the element. This creates a potential difference across the Hall element, known as the Hall voltage.
Voltage Measurement: The Hall voltage is measured using appropriate circuitry. Since the Hall voltage is directly proportional to the strength of the magnetic field and the flow rate of the fluid, it provides a way to determine the flow rate accurately.
