A closed-loop control system, also referred to as a feedback control system, involves continuously monitoring the system's output and using that information to adjust the control action. This allows the system to maintain desired conditions or performance even in the presence of disturbances or uncertainties. In a closed-loop system, the controller compares the actual system output with the desired reference input and generates a control signal to correct any deviations. This type of system is widely used in applications where accuracy, stability, and adaptability are crucial, such as temperature control in a room or cruise control in a car.
Key components of a feedback control system include:
Plant/Process: The physical system that is being controlled, such as a machine, a chemical process, a vehicle, etc.
Sensor/Transducer: Device that measures the system's output and provides feedback to the controller.
Controller: Computes the control action based on the feedback information and the desired reference input.
Actuator: Executes the control action by applying changes to the system.
Feedback Loop: The pathway through which the output information is fed back to the controller to adjust the control action.
Control systems can be further categorized into linear and nonlinear systems based on the mathematical relationships governing their behavior. Additionally, they can be classified as time-invariant or time-varying based on whether the system parameters change with time.
Modern control theory involves advanced mathematical techniques to analyze and design control systems to meet specific performance criteria such as stability, transient response, steady-state accuracy, and robustness in the presence of disturbances or uncertainties. Different control strategies, such as Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control, state-space control, and adaptive control, are employed based on the system's characteristics and desired outcomes.
